This Week In Cigar History: February 11th-17th

Founded by Julius Caesar Newman, a twenty year-old Hungarian immigrant cigar maker (in a barn behind the Ohio family home in 1895), the J.C. Newman Cigar Company rapidly expanded from its humble beginnings to employ over 700 workers by 1916.

One of tobacco’s giant personalities, Stanford Newman and his two sons, Eric and Bobby, consolidated their control of the oldest family owned cigar company in America, this week on February 14th, 1986.

Founded by Julius Caesar Newman, a twenty year-old Hungarian immigrant cigar maker (in a barn behind the Ohio family home in 1895), the J.C. Newman Cigar Company rapidly expanded from its humble beginnings to employ over 700 workers by 1916. Following a merger with a rival Cleveland based company during the lean Depression years, the renamed M&N Cigar Manufacturers Inc. moved to the weather friendly, port city of Tampa, Florida in 1954.

Other notable events included the purchase of the premium Cuesta-Rey brand (1958) and a profitable business partnership with the legendary cigar family of Carlos Fuente (1986)-that innovatively begat the sales of the premium La Unica in bundles, making the deluxe smoke more affordable with the elimination of the packaging. This thriving association continues today producing limited numbers of hand crafted, richly flavored, high-end cigars under the Fuente & Newman Premium Cigars Ltd. brand.

In celebration of the family’s 100th anniversary in the business, the company’s name was proudly changed back to the J.C. Newman Cigar Company (1997).
