This Week In Cigar History Mar 17-23

Cigar smoker Bruce Willis, a 1980’s wisecracking television detective turned modern day, buff action hero was born this week on March 19th, 1955.

Raised in New Jersey, Willis dropped out of Montclair State College and crossed the mighty Hudson River to embark on an acting career and to pay a few bills by bartending at Big Apple hotspots. A few Off Broadway stints gave way to celebrity recognition in Hollywood after he beat out over 3000 guys to snag the male lead as David Addison Jr, in the hip Moonlighting detective series (1985-1989) that also starred the delectable Cybill Shepherd.

Willis’ portrayal as savvy cop John McClane in the blockbusting Die Hard movies propelled his career into the stratosphere, beginning with the first released action hit in 1988. Since then, Willis has deftly performed in comedic (The Whole Nine Yards and its sequel, The Whole Ten Yards) and dramatic films (Pulp Fiction, The Sixth Sense, Twelve Monkeys, Apocalypse, Sin City). Plus, on television he earned an Emmy for his guest role on the sitcom Friends-in a part he played for free after losing a bet with his The Whole Nine Yards co-star Matthew Perry.

Willis also commands attention for his activism on behalf of U.S. troops. Lately, he has set aside ideological differences and teamed up with political polar opposite -but cigar puffing actress Susan Sarandon -to campaign for better treatment of injured armed services’ personnel.
