This Week In Cigar History July 28 - August 1

Bodybuilder, movie star, politician and cigar connoisseur Arnold Schwarzenegger is this week’s birthday boy, celebrating on July 30th.

Schwarzenegger smoked Virginians during his weightlifting days in Europe...but it was his future father-in law, Sargent Shriver who gave the now 38th Governor of California, his first proper cigar in 1977.

Nowadays as an elected official, Schwarzenegger's political view, ability to balance the state's budget, and other official positions garner a steady stream of critics. His stogie loving habits do too. In particular, anti-smoking and public health advocates have denounced the famed cigar-smoking 'tent' in the courtyard outside the governor's office in Sacramento. In response to his detractors, the Arnold is quoted as saying; "As, long as I'm at the Capitol, I will be smoking my stogies down there."

Schwarzenegger has also indulged in a widely reported Cuban smoke while on an official jaunt across the border in Ottawa, Canada -- that also stirred up naysayers from coast to coast.

Yet the man crowned Mr. Universe, and still glowingly referred to as the Hollywood action hero, the Terminator -- certainly knows how to make amends with some of his critics. After a widely discussed 'tiff' with fellow stogie lover and conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh...Schwarzenegger gifted his fellow Republican a humidor adorned with the Seal of the Governor of the State of California. Inside, were cigars with the governor's own band and cellophane wrapper bearing his signature in gold ink. Naturally, a 'truce' was unofficially reached (or smoked).
