Smoking La Vida Pura

Costa Rican cigars return.

June/July 2008 , Page 23

As any severely sunburned tourist can attest, Costa Rica's known for great beaches and a pura vida philosophy that usually results in at least a few alcohol-hazy vacation memories. Unlike its neighbor Nicaragua, however, one thing it's not known for is cigars. Sure, Bahia and Bucanero had a presence there back in the '90s, but today it's not exactly a country littered with brands.

One company, going by the easy-to-remember moniker Costa Rica Cigar (formerly known as Brun del RĂ©), is aiming to change that with a series of new lines, including "The Sig" -- which stands not for The Cigar Report's fearless leader but signature blend. Composed of an aged Costa Rican maduro wrapper around Cuban-seed Nicaraguan tobacco, this hand-rolled cigar guarantees at least one thing: a strong smoke. And even if you're not reposing on the beach, that should leave you singing the virtues of pura vida in no time.
